What verification is

Know Your Customer, usually shortened to KYC, is the check that confirms you are who you say you are before an account can be used fully. Exchanges run it to keep accounts tied to real people, to make it harder to use the platform for fraud or laundering, and because financial services are generally required to know who their customers are.

It is a one time check for most people. You complete it once, and you are not asked again unless something about your account or your documents changes.

We use Sumsub

Crpko does not inspect your documents itself. Identity verification is carried out by Sumsub, a third party verification provider used by financial services and exchanges internationally.

This matters to you for one reason above the others: when you verify, your documents and your selfie are submitted to Sumsub, not to Crpko. Sumsub performs the checks and returns a result. What Crpko receives is the outcome and the identity details confirmed by that check.

Sumsub is a processor acting on our instructions. How personal information is handled generally, including information reaching processors, is set out in our Privacy Policy.

What you may be asked for

Sumsub supports document types across more than two hundred countries. For India, the categories its documentation covers are:

  • A passport
  • An identity card, which for India includes Aadhaar
  • A driving licence
  • A tax payer number document, which for India means your PAN
  • A selfie, used to match your face against the photograph on the document

Sumsub also supports an Aadhaar route through DigiLocker, the Government of India digital document service, where the details come from the government record rather than from a photograph of a card.

Which of these you are asked for depends on how verification is configured for your account and your region, so treat the list above as the range Sumsub covers rather than a fixed set you must produce.

How the check runs

From your side it is short, and it goes like this:

  • You start verification from your account and are handed to Sumsub.
  • You photograph or upload your document. Sumsub reads it automatically rather than asking you to type the details.
  • You take a selfie, which is matched against the photograph on the document. Depending on how the check is set up, this may include a liveness step to confirm a real person is present rather than a photograph of one.
  • Sumsub checks the document for validity and authenticity, and returns a result.

Sumsub states that its document check completes within twenty seconds. That is the automated part. A submission that needs a person to look at it takes longer, and we would rather not put a figure on that than put a wrong one.

What comes back

A check finishes in one of three ways. It passes, and your account is verified. It comes back needing something more from you, usually a clearer photograph or a different document, and you can try again. Or it is declined.

If you are asked to try again, it is very often the photograph rather than the document. Good light, the whole document inside the frame, no glare across it, and no fingers over the text will solve most of them.

Your documents and your data

Verification data is personal information, and it is handled under our Privacy Policy along with everything else we hold about you.

One detail is worth naming because people ask about it specifically. Where verification runs through the Aadhaar route, the identifier returned by that check is masked rather than complete.

Sumsub returns the details a check confirms, which can include your name, date of birth, gender, address and the photograph from the check.

If something is wrong

If your verification is declined and you believe that is a mistake, or a detail confirmed about you is wrong, write to us and we will look at it. Verification decisions made by an automated check are not the end of the conversation.
